چکیده

Ipsenol was identified from the frass of male, but not female, Ips katidens from British Columbia, feeding in phloem tissue of lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta var. latifolia. The responses of 1. latidens to sources of ipsenol and cis-verbenol were determined with multiple-funnel traps in stands of lodgepole pine in British Columbia. lpsenol attracted both male and female I. latidens, verifying that it is a pheromone for this species. Male I. latidens showed a slight preference for (S)-( -)-ipsenol. cis-Verbenol was not produced by beetles of either sex and, in contrast to an earlier report, both enantiomers inhibited attraction to ipsenol-baited traps. The predators, Enoclerus sphegeus and Thanasimus undatulus (Cleridae), were attracted to traps baited with cis-verbenol and ipsenol. Key Words-Pheromone, ipsenol, cis-verbenol, chirality, Ips latidens, Coleoptera, Scolytidae, predator, kairomone, Enoclerus sphegeus, Thanasimus undatulus, Cleridae.

Host-Tree Monoterpenes and Biosynthesis of Aggregation Pheromones in the Bark Beetle Ips paraconfusus

A paradigm developed in the 1970s that Ips bark beetles biosynthesize their aggregation pheromone components ipsenol and ipsdienol by hydroxylating myrcene, a host tree monoterpene. Similarly, host α-pinene was hydroxylated to a third pheromone component cis-verbenol. In 1990, however, we reported that amounts of ipsenol and ipsdienol produced by male Ips paraconfusus (Coleoptera: Scolytinae) f...

Dose-dependent and Species-specific Responses of Pine Bark Beetles (coleoptera: Scolytidae) to Monoterpenes in Association with Pheromones

The Canadian Entomologist 132: 183 195 (2000) Monoterpenes affected the attraction of three sympatric species of bark beetles (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) to pheromone-baited multiple-funnel traps in stands of lodgepole pine. Catches of Ips pini (Say) in traps baited with its pheromone, ipsdienol, were directly related to the release rates of 3-carene, pphellandrene, and ppinene. Catches of Dendroc...

Variation in enantiospecific attraction of Ips avulsus (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) to the pheromone ipsdienol in Georgia.

In 2006, we tested the responses of the small southern pine engraver, Ips avulsus (Eichhoff) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), to multiple-funnel traps baited with (+)-, (-)-, and (+/-)-ipsdienol. Three experiments were conducted in Georgia with all traps co-baited with one of the following lure combinations, respectively: experiment 1, ipsenol; experiment 2, lanierone and (-)-alpha-pinene; and expe...

Pheromone Biosynthesis in the Bark Beetle, Ips Paraconfusus, during Feeding or Exposure to Vapours of Host Plant Precursors

The quantities of trans-verbenol, myrtenol, and the pheromone, cis-verbenol, in the hindguts of males and females were found to increase in linear proportion following exposure to increasing concentrations of vapour of the host plant precursor, (-)-a-pinene. Males produced significantly more of these compounds than females. Differences between males and females in the ratios of compound product...

Role of ipsdienol, ipsenol, and cis-verbenol in chemical ecology of Ips avulsus, Ips calligraphus, and Ips grandicollis (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae).

Stressed or damaged pine (Pinus sp.) trees in the southeastern United States are often colonized simultaneously by three southern Ips species (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae): small southern pine engraver, Ips avulsus (Eichhoff); sixspined ips, Ips calligraphus (Germar); and eastern fivespined ips, Ips grandicollis (Eichhoff). All three species mediate colonization of host material with ...
